Data generated by the TARGET initiative is accessible through a tabular Data Matrix*. The goal is to provide users a transparent view and easy-to-use data access. TARGET projects are ongoing, and new data will be incorporated into the Data Matrix as they are generated, along with an update of the matrix version number. New data submissions, along with corresponding Data Matrix versions, will be announced on the TARGET Data Portal. Users should note the version of the TARGET Data Matrix when accessing information.

The tabular matrix links to as many as four levels of data, from raw data files to summarized findings (refer to the Data Matrix legend for details). Specifically included in the matrix are:

To obtain specific datasets or metadata, including descriptions of each project, users can hover over the text within the table and click to access the appropriate files. The pilot TARGET projects, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and neuroblastoma (NBL), are separated by phase: Phase I, the pilot portion of the initiative, and Phase II, expansion through ARRA funding. Note: NBL data are color-coded by phase.

Open and controlled-access tiers of TARGET datasets are available for each cancer studied. Open-access tier data are currently available through both the TARGET Data Matrix and as listed below. To protect patient privacy and confidentiality, certain data are available only through controlled access. To gain access to controlled-access tier data, investigators need to obtain specific permission by filling out the Data Access Request (controlled-access tier dataset instructions and form). Access the TARGET Data Matrix.

* Please note that the TARGET Data Matrix format and schema is currently in a draft form, which will continually adapt and improve as we learn what the research community needs and desires. We encourage your comments, questions and suggestions for improvement which can be sent to ocg@mail.nih.gov.

Data generated by the TARGET initiative is deposited into the Data Coordinating Center and made available for bulk download through the TARGET Data Portal. In addition, TARGET data can be analyzed using the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid® (caBIG®) tools, the Cancer Genome Workbench and the Cancer Molecular Analysis Portal. These methods allow users to integrate genomics data across various large-scale projects and can also be accessed via the TARGET Data Portal. By making data available for broad use, the TARGET initiative will make valuable contributions to the future of cancer care, and hopefully cure.
